Magellium and 13 partners launch HydroVenture, a center for operational space hydrology

Created under the impetus of Magellium, CS Group and vorteX-io, the consortium launches HydroVenture, the first operational space hydrology center for global water monitoring and management (supporting the France 2030 plan, the European Destination Earth program and contributing to the UN's water resource monitoring and early warning services).

Alongside our partners, we are launching HydroVenture, Europe's first center for operational space hydrology.

On March 28, 2024, HydroVenture was launched at a press conference by Magellium Artal Group, CS Group, vorteX-io and the Data Terra infrastructure represented by CNES and IRD.

What is HydroVenture?

HydroVenture is Europe's first center for operational space hydrology. It is an alliance of 14 major public and private players from the space and research industries: Magellium Artal Group, CS Group, vorteX-io, MEOSS, SERTIT, CLS, CERFACS, BRL Ingénierie, HydroMatters and the Data Terra research infrastructure (CNES, CNRS, INRAE and IRD).
This initiative aims to revolutionise our understanding and management of water resources on a global scale, by developing an industry of excellence in space hydrology and offering new products and services for the observation, modeling and real-time management of the planet's water resources. All this is in line with the objectives of France 2030, for which Magellium, CS Group and vorteX-io are prizewinners, and of the European Destination Earth (DestinE) and Copernicus programs, while contributing to the UN's EarlyWarning services.

Why create such an alliance?

Water has been a dwindling resource for decades, and the facts are clear: with over 8 billion human beings on Earth, demand for fresh water is set to increase by 55% by 2050, and the risk of floods and droughts is set to multiply in the coming years, with Europe - and France in particular - likely to be hardest hit.

Yet very few of the world's lakes, rivers and streams (continental hydrology) are sufficiently instrumented to measure water levels. River and stream networks are also highly heterogeneous, with data either scarce or not shared at all.

To date, there is no integrated global system for measuring and managing this "blue gold". Yet water can only be managed if it is measured.

How does HydroVenture respond?

HydroVenture provides a new answer by combining spatial and in situ data to monitor continental hydrological systems in real time. This innovative approach will overcome current challenges, notably data heterogeneity and the limitations of terrestrial sensor networks.
This will make it possible to monitor reserves, prevent flood and drought risks, and improve water quality. HydroVenture's ambition is to meet the needs of private companies, state services, inter-governmental and international organisations involved in water resource management, particularly in the insurance, agriculture and energy sectors.

Who can join Hydroventure?

Industry players are strongly encouraged to join the alliance: research laboratories, startups, SMEs, industrial groups and public sector entities. This unprecedented public-private collaboration can make the difference in preserving this precious resource. Although the alliance is currently 100% French, the aim is to integrate European and international players.

The DIANE project will provide a response to the proliferation of satellites and space debris in low-Earth orbit. Magellium Artal Group, in partnership with Thales Alenia Space, has been selected as part of the France 2030 plan for this project.
FLEX, ESA's hyperspectral mission, is designed to provide global maps of vegetation fluorescence. After leading the consortium in the prototyping phase, Magellium Artal Group has been selected to lead the consortium in the development phase.
