Remote sensing, measurement physics, space observation engineer M/F

Job description

As part of its earth observation activities, Magellium is involved in satellite observation projects and studies, drawing on its scientific skills in remote sensing, measurement physics, atmospheric corrections and geophysical parameter retrieval algorithms.

The fields concerned are generally low- and high-resolution optical imaging, imaging radiometers, spectro-imagers or atmospheric sounders.

These skills are put to good use in support activities for space agencies (CNES, ESA, EUMETSAT), as well as in application projects involving space data and their interpretation (such as Copernicus services). These include performance and sensitivity studies, sensor calibration, and the fusion of data from several satellite missions.

Most of our activities involve carrying out algorithmic studies and prototyping data processing solutions, in a scientific context with links to research laboratories, but with the aim of producing rapidly operational solutions for the ground segments of space missions, or for services set up to exploit space data.

These activities therefore require both high scientific quality and the rigorous methods demanded by the space context, close to industrial standards.

The position

Reporting to the "Earth Observation" unit, you will be responsible for leading and carrying out studies or projects involving measurement physics activities (radiative transfer, atmospheric correction, inversion of atmospheric parameters, radiometric calibration of in-flight sensors) in the field of optics, applied to multispectral and hyperspectral sensors :

  • Design and prototyping
  • Analysis and specification of methods and algorithms, design of scientific processing chains
  • Mastery and use of tools and methods: inverse models, radiative transfer models, etc.
  • Drafting of documents (reports, balance sheets, specifications, manuals, publications)
  • Oral presentations of results within a project framework or at conferences
  • Coordination and thematic relations with laboratories, French and European partners, and customers in the field
  • Proposals for new developments
  • Literature reviews and technology watch
  • Take responsibility for projects or studies in the required fields
  • Participation in tenders

Profile required

A PhD, you have solid training and experience (at least 3 years) in the field of Earth observation, and more specifically in the physics of measurement (radiative transfer, atmospheric corrections, inversion of atmospheric parameters) applied to multispectral and hyperspectral optics.

Validated experience in a scientific laboratory involved in Earth observation for space missions, having written publications and spoken at scientific conferences, would be a plus.

Skills required:

  • Solid grounding in applied mathematics, statistics and image processing
  • In-depth training in remote sensing and space observation, particularly for optical missions
  • Knowledge of measurement physics, atmospheric physics, geophysical measurements and their applications
  • Statistical methods and uncertainty calculations for space data calibration and comparison of multi-mission or space/in-situ data
  • Knowledge of radiative transfer techniques and models
  • Methods for restitution of geophysical parameters from spatial data
  • Autonomie pour la mise en œuvre des outils informatiques performants nécessaires aux études, au prototypage, dans un environnement industriel
  • Knowledge of Python, Matlab, idl.

Other skills:

  • Very good oral and written English skills
  • Writing technical and scientific documents in English
  • Ability to adapt and develop skills in new technical areas
  • Creative, curious, rigorous and autonomous

Yes, we hire end-of-study internships. These internships can then develop into permanent contracts (50% of internships transformed into permanent contracts by 2023).

We can take on work-study students subject to availability of places and the company/school rhythm, as some projects are not always compatible with a work-study rhythm.

The process is fast! We first contact you for an initial discussion with the HR department by telephone or, ideally, on site at our premises. This allows you to immerse yourself in the company and discuss our vision, our values and the job's missions. Then, depending on the nature of the position, we propose a technical discussion with the project manager or the manager of the unit to which you will be assigned. We make sure that each exchange is as natural as possible to put you in the best possible conditions. If there is a specific arrangement to be made for your situation, please let us know!

You can apply for our vacancies directly on our website www.magellium.com in the Join us tab.

Your application must include a maximum 3-page CV. Little bonus: be creative and original in your presentation! (video, infographics for example).
