European Project Manager - Center of Expertise for a Scientific Mission in Earth Observation M/F
Job description
Magellium (Artal Group), with its 300-strong workforce, is an independent player specialising in the remote sensing data value chain (from satellite or drone sensors to their use in earth observation systems and services, mapping and geointelligence), promoting expertise in space technologies, software, signal processing and geomatics.
As part of its earth observation activities(earthobservation.magellium.com), Magellium is involved in major programs run by European space or operational agencies.
These Earth observation projects involve scientific processing chains for on-board satellite payloads, or the generation of value-added data for applications. These processing chains, whether prototypes or operational, are developed with a view to integration in the ground segments of satellite missions or in major operational Earth observation programs .
The specificity of these projects lies in the combined mastery of scientific or algorithmic techniques for remote sensing, data combination or thematic fusion, and engineering -methodological, organisational and IT- in an environment dedicated to scientific quality and operational performance. These projects are generally carried out in a multi-partner European context, interacting with scientific experts and industrialists in the IT field, in the service of the agencies that are the major principals in the field of environmental monitoring and geophysics.
The position
Au sein de l’unité « Observation de la Terre », vous aurez la charge d’un projet très structurant en tant que chef de projet: le projet FLEX DISC – ESA Fluorescence Experiment Mission (Earth Explorer) – Data Innovation and Science Cluster.
The FLEX satellite mission is a European Space Agency (ESA) Earth Explorer 8 mission scheduled for launch in 2026. This space mission aims to provide information on the photosynthetic activity of vegetation by characterising the total energy balance (received energy, reflected energy, surface temperature, fluorescence). Flying in tandem with Sentinel-3, the FLEX mission will provide expert biophysical products for understanding photosynthesis-related activity, paving the way for applications related to vegetation stress or primary production. For more details, see https://www.esa.int/Applications/Observing_the_Earth/FutureEO/FLEX
Magellium is the leader of this ESA project, which involves numerous European scientific and industrial partners. The FLEX DISC project comprises various activities which are carried out collectively, according to the responsibilities of each partner. These activities are of various types:
- Scientific and algorithmic activities aimed at developing processes to make the most of the mission's scientific and technical objectives.
- Estimation of algorithmic performance, data performance when available, and calibration to ensure that measurements correspond to expectations.
- Prototype development to demonstrate that the mission's data will achieve its objectives
- Development of the operational chain to be implemented in the global ground segment of the FLEX mission
- Development of data quality control tools, as well as data calibration and validation tools
- The development of a collaborative platform enabling users to access data, carry out processing and contribute to development by proposing algorithms and products.
- Participation in the mission's in-flight acceptance phase
- Exploiting the mission by ensuring that the data generated by the mission are appropriate for its objectives
Your job will involve overall management and steering of the project, both internally (activities entrusted to Magellium) and externally (for the consortium as a whole and in relation with ESA).
Vous serez le garant des contraintes du projet : contractuelles, techniques, financières et humaines.
Your main responsibilities will be as follows:
- Coordination of the entire consortium and Magellium teams
- Organisation and progress planning
- Management of the resources (human, material, financial) needed to carry out the project
- Controlling costs and deadlines, meeting contractual commitments
- Identifying risks and taking action to control them throughout the project
- Direct interface with the client and partners for project implementation, major orientations and developments
- Coordination of the major phases of the project life cycle in the space context (phases, reviews, processes, associated supplies, etc.).
- Decision-making for technical choices and orientations within the project in consultation with the technical teams and the customer
- Development of activities within the project, as an extension of the project or in fields related to the project
Profile required
