We have been selected to lead the European consortium for ESA's FLEX DISC project

FLEX, ESA's hyperspectral mission, is designed to provide global maps of vegetation fluorescence. After leading the consortium in the prototyping phase, Magellium Artal Group has been selected to lead the consortium in the development phase.

What is ESA's FLEX mission?

FLEX is an ESA hyperspectral mission hyperspectral mission designed to provide global maps of vegetation fluorescence that can reflect photosynthetic activity as well as plant health and stress.

What is FLEX DISC?

The FLuorescence EXplorer Data Innovationand Science Cluster(FLEX DISC) aims to set up the performance center for the FLEX space mission. It involves 14 European partners: Magellium, Deimos, GMV (SP, UK, Pol), Finnish Meteorological Institute, JB Hyperspectral Devices GmbH, Forschungszentrum Jülich, University of Leicester, National Physical Laboratory, Serco, Terradue, Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC) of the University of Twente and Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca.

The FLEX DISC project is the result of a scientific collaboration which, since 2017, has developed prototype processing chains and carried out radiometric and geometric tasks.

What are the project stages?

The project will be carried out in several stages: improvement of algorithms and user products, development of operational processing chains and validation tools, in-flight validation, routine operations and performance monitoring. We are now moving on to the development stage.

What is Magellium Artal Group's contribution?

For a 6-year period, we will coordinate the entire project. We will be working on scientific activities aimed at developing the IPF (Instrument Processing Facility). Our aim is toestablish the most efficient connection between instrument measurements and the final scientific product. Finally, we are responsible for preparing the whole processing chain, validating the mission in flight and ensuring the highest quality of user products.

➡️ We would like to thank the ESA for trusting us with the success of the FLEX mission. We would also like to thank our partners for their invaluable and indispensable collaboration in this unprecedented opportunity.
